The Human Security Team of EUMM Field Office Zugdidi presented an overview of the EUMM structure, mandate and its activities to the participants of the study visit ‘Youth Work Reality in Georgia’, organised by the Support, Advanced Learning and Training Opportunities within the European Youth programme Eastern Europe and Caucasus Resource Centre (SALTO EECA). About 30 experienced youth workers from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and the United Kingdom attended the briefing.

The audience was interested to learn more about the Mission’s activities in the fields of stabilization, normalization, confidence building and informing EU policy makers. It was explained that in order to gather objective information, EUMM patrols along the Administrative Boundary Lines, has Memoranda of Understanding with the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs and Ministry of Defence, has regular contact with various organisations (both state and NGOs) on the ground and talks frequently to local people. The EUMM presenters underscored the important role of the Geneva International Discussions, the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism and the telephone hotline in diffusing tension. Answering a question from the audience it was also highlighted that EUMM cannot provide humanitarian aid to the population, but shares the information gathered through its extensive presence on the ground  with organisations that have the means to assist people in need.
