EUMM DEPLORES SERIOUS INCIDENT THAT TOOK PLACE ON 18 MAY AND CALLS AD HOC MEETING

19.05.2011

The EU Monitoring Mission deplores the serious shooting incident that took place on 18 May close to the South Ossetian Administrative Boundary Line, in which two Georgian civilians were wounded, one of whom is in a critical condition.

Once the Mission was informed of the incident, it responded by sending patrols to the vicinity to gather information about what had happened. It also called an ad hoc meeting, in the framework of the IPRM, which took place today in Dvani with representatives from the Georgian Government, the Russian Federation and de facto South Ossetian authorities. We welcome the release at the meeting of those four Georgian citizens detained in relation to yesterday’s incident and one citizen detained a few days ago.

Since the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, the EUMM will continue its efforts to gather as much information as possible about what happened. Depending on developments the Mission may call for further meetings in the coming days.
