Visit of the EU Political and Security Committee to EUMM highlights EU’s strong commitment to stability and peace in Georgia

11.04.2024
TBILISI, 11 April – Today, EUMM hosted the EU Political and Security Committee (PSC) on a patrol to the South Ossetian Administrative Boundary Line (ABL) in the area of the Khurvaleti village. During the patrol, EUMM monitors provided the Ambassadors from EU Member States with a briefing on the current security and humanitarian situation. More particularly, they explained how ‘borderisation’ and restrictions on the freedom of movement negatively affect the conflict-affected populations on both sides of the ABL.

After welcoming the PSC delegation, the recently appointed Head of Mission, Ms. Bettina Patricia Boughani, said: “This important visit highlights the EU’s strong commitment to stability and security in Georgia. I am deeply grateful for the privilege to lead a committed team of more than 300 EUMM staff. Together, we strive to ensure there is no return to hostilities and foster confidence-building among the divided communities.”

The Head of EUMM, Ms. Boughani, added: “It is crucial for the delegation of EU Member States’ Ambassadors to witness the security situation in Georgia firsthand, as it provides them with direct insights on the challenges and complexities faced on the ground. This will prove crucial when developing EU decisions that support stability and peace efforts in the region.”

The PSC is composed of EU Member States Ambassadors based in Brussels. It provides strategic guidance in the areas covered by the EU Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), and prepares decisions of the Council of EU Ministers.
