Freedom of movement, access to education and recent maritime incidents discussed at the 6th IPRM meeting in Gali

On 6 October in Gali, Georgian, Abkhaz, Russian and EUMM representatives attended the sixth Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism meeting conducted under the auspices of the UN.

The discussions focused on freedom of movement between the Zugdidi and the Gali districts as well as on different aspects of access to education for GEO school children resident in ABK.  On the basis of a report provided by EUMM on the situation monitored on the ground, participants agreed that overall access was satisfactory.  Other issues discussed included previously reported incidents as well as helicopter over flights in the area of the Inguri River. Participants agreed to further investigate the matter.

Concerning the recent maritime incidents, an overview of the existing legal mechanisms within the framework of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea was provided. It was agreed that maritime incidents with potential security consequences must be avoided.

The next meeting is scheduled to take place in Gali on 20 October 2009.
