Ahead of a visit to Moscow next week for a range of discussions, the Head of the EUMM Ambassador Hansjörg Haber, visited the Georgian and Russian check-points at Perevi to see the situation on the ground for himself. He was able to speak to both the Georgian and Russian check-point commanders about their work and the general situation in the area. He was also able to speak to local people about their views and concerns. Overall the situation appeared calm, with around 200 local people crossing the check-points daily to go about their normal activities. Where locals did have a difficulty it was in accessing their land across the administrative boundary line near Sinaguri. He will be reflecting the issues learnt during his Moscow trip.
As part of his fact-finding visit, the Head of Mission also visited the EUMM Field Office in Kashuri where he discussed the role and effectiveness of local confidence building measures.
