HUNGARY TAKES OVER THE ROTATING PRESIDENCY OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

From 1 January 2011, Hungary takes over the rotating six month Presidency of the European Union from Belgium.

As the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Hungary will be responsible for organising and chairing all the meetings of the Council except for the Foreign Affairs Council, which is chaired by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Ms Catherine Ashton.

The political agenda of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU has been built around the human factor and focuses on four main issues: growth and employment for preserving the European social model; stronger Europe; citizen friendly Union; enlargement and neighbourhood policy.
