EUMM welcomes pragmatic approach to local issues

24.06.2013
In line with its mandate, one of EUMM’s key priorities is the livelihood of local communities in the areas adjacent to the Administrative Boundary Line (ABL). Since agriculture is the main source of income for many people, the blockage of a cross-ABL irrigation channel near Dvani had raised serious concerns.

On 16 June, the Hotline was activated to inform all sides and to request the restoration of the water supply channel.  A few days later, ahead of the Incident Prevention and Response (IPRM) meeting in Ergneti on 21 June, the problem had been constructively addressed and the water is now flowing freely again.

The Mission also welcomes the release of a detainee from the Tskhinvali isolator in the hours following the conclusion of the IPRM meeting.

EUMM thanks all parties for their approach, and is looking forward to seeing more of these pragmatic solutions to local communities’ problems in terms of livelihood and freedom of movement.
