International Women’s Day 2020: EUMM reiterates support to advancing gender equality

08.03.2020
The EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM) joins the global celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD) today to reiterate support for continued efforts to advance gender equality and human rights of all women and girls. This year’s global IWD campaign theme is I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights.

“International Women’s Day provides us an opportunity to recognize women’s critical contributions to peacebuilding and international peace and security. It’s a call to action to take further decisive steps to strengthen gender equality and to increase women’s meaningful participation in all aspects of conflict resolution in line with the Women, Peace and Security agenda,” said Acting Head of Mission Catherine Fearon.

For this year’s International Women’s Day, EUMM will collaborate with photographer Dina Oganova and author Salome Benidze with their sHEROes project which remembers and introduces us to women affected by the August 2008 Russia-Georgia war. The photo exhibition with women’s stories will be ongoing in the Freedom Square underpass during March – and will also take place in Gori later in the month.

2020 is a pivotal year for advancing gender equality worldwide, marking 25 years since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action—a progressive roadmap for gender equality—and the 20th anniversary of the landmark UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.

“Gender equality is a core EU value, and increasing women’s participation in our work is critical for operational effectiveness. Advancing gender equality and empowering women supports comprehensive peace and contributes to building stable societies,” said EUMM Gender Adviser Sini Ramo.

“Highlighting women’s achievements and equality is a joint goal where each of us plays a part. We all can and must take individual actions in our daily lives at home and at work – continued commitment is needed for lasting positive change in Georgia and beyond,” said EUMM Gender Focal Point Thea Tsitelashvili.
