On 21 March 2017, the 44th meeting in the framework of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) took place in Gali, chaired by the UN with participation of the EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) Georgia. The meeting was notably constructive, although discussions on the 19 May 2016 killing in Khurcha still continue.
Consequences for the local population of the recent closure of two crossing points were discussed and the need for mitigating measures was stressed. Information on other incidents and security issues was discussed including the case of Giorgi Lukava and three women, detained on 9 March 2017.
Humanitarian approach to the security issues was repeatedly underlined during the discussions.
The next Gali IPRM meeting is scheduled for 25 April 2017.
